Founder’s Story

Personal trials to Absolute Care Services

At the heart of Absolute Care Services lies a story of resilience, hope, and unwavering determination. Our journey began with a personal battle, deeply influencing our mission to deliver compassionate and comprehensive home care. This is the story of Della, her daughter Gemma, and how their experiences shaped the foundation of our business.

When Della’s daughter, Gemma, was just 2 years old, she was very ill. She was regularly misdiagnosed; however, Della knew her daughter and knew something was wrong. So, she borrowed £75 from her father and took Gemma to get a private MRI scan. This was when she was finally diagnosed, and the family found out she had a brain tumour. Despite being told the condition was terminal, Della’s determination never wavered. The family’s persistence led them to Atkinson Morley Hospital, the only facility willing to operate. The operation, initially expected to last only a few hours to ease Gemma’s pain, extended to many more due to her resilience and Mr. Marsh and his team’s unwavering commitment, resulting in the removal of the tumour.

Gemma’s journey, however, was far from over. Over the next decade, the tumour returned three times, with each instance presenting greater challenges. The second recurrence was particularly dire, leading medical professionals to advise against treatment due to the high risks involved. Unwilling to give up, Della embarked on legal battles with the NHS to secure the necessary medical interventions for Gemma. Her unwavering advocacy ensured Gemma received life-saving treatment against all odds. At the time, the outlook was grim, and it was likely Gemma would need full-time care and would not recognize her family. Della, in her heart, knew that as a family, they would defy the odds and fight every battle that came their way.

A further hurdle was the potential closure of Atkinson Morley Hospital, which posed another significant threat when Gemma was 9. Della spearheaded a major campaign, gathering thousands of signatures and staging public demonstrations that not only kept the hospital open but also ensured that Gemma could access care and treatment.

Absolute Care Services is not just a business; it is a mission inspired by a mother’s love and a family’s journey through adversity. Our commitment is to provide dignified, personalised, and high-quality care, ensuring every individual receives the same level of dedication and compassion. Our hope is that our story and our business can support families and their loved ones so they can receive the quality care they deserve.

We are proud to say that Gemma is now 35, fighting fit, and has a son named Oliver, our little miracle. Although Gemma does need some background support, she is an amazing mum, sister, daughter and aunt.
